1. Do I need prior hiking experience?
Not necessarily. Many first-time hikers successfully summit Mount Kinabalu every year. As long as you are reasonably fit and comfortable walking uphill for several hours, you can enjoy this climb. We’ll have experienced guides supporting you every step of the way.
2. What is the best time of year to climb?
Mount Kinabalu can be climbed year-round, but the driest and most comfortable months are typically March–September. Weather can be unpredictable in the mountains, but our team will guide you through all conditions safely.
3. How cold does it get at the summit?
Temperatures near the summit can drop to 0°C–5°C, especially before sunrise. Warm clothing, gloves, and a windproof jacket are essential.
4. Is drinking water available on the mountain?
Yes. You can refill your bottle with treated or boiled water at certain points, or purchase bottled drinks at Laban Rata. We recommend carrying 2 litres from the start.
5. What happens if it rains or the weather changes?
Weather changes are normal in high-altitude areas. Your mountain guide will decide if it’s safe to continue. Safety always comes first, and climbs may be delayed or adjusted depending on conditions.
6. Is altitude sickness common?
Most climbers experience mild shortness of breath due to the elevation. Serious altitude sickness is rare on Mount Kinabalu, but walking slowly, staying hydrated, and having enough rest helps greatly.
7. Can I fly out on the same day I descend?
We don’t recommend it. Delays can happen due to weather, fatigue, or slower descent times. An overnight stay in Kota Kinabalu is safer and much more relaxing.
8. Are meals included during the climb?
Yes. All meals stated in the itinerary are included, typically breakfast, packed lunch, dinner, and an early supper before the summit push.
9. Will someone pick me up from my hotel?
Yes. Shared transport will pick you up from your hotel in Kota Kinabalu. If you’re staying outside the city area, a small surcharge applies.
10. Can children join the climb?
Kids aged 10 and above may join, depending on fitness and comfort level. The climb is demanding, so parental judgement is important.
11. How early should I book?
Permits are limited, book at least 6 months in advance. Every climber must register with their passport/ID at Park HQ. You may choose alternative dates if your preferred date is full.
